Isabella's Family
Isabella of Aragon was the youngest of nine children born to her father, King Peter IV. Seven of her siblings were half-siblings, meaning they shared only one parent with Isabella.
Her older half-brothers included John I of Aragon and Martin of Aragon. Her older half-sisters were Constance, Queen of Sicily, Joanna, Countess of Ampurias, and Eleanor, Queen of Castile.
Marriage and Challenges
Isabella married James II of Urgell in Valencia on June 29, 1407. Soon after their wedding, James was given an important role as the lieutenant (a high-ranking official) of the Kingdom of Aragon in 1408.
The Urgell Conflict
A big challenge came in 1413. James II of Urgell believed he should be the next king of Aragon. He was a close male relative of the royal family, the House of Barcelona. However, a different person, Ferdinand I of Aragon, was chosen to become king in 1412.
King Ferdinand had offered James a large sum of money (150,000 florins) and a new title, Duke of Montblanc. He also suggested that his son Henry marry Isabella and James's eldest daughter, Isabella. But James refused this offer, following advice from his mother.
Because James rebelled against the new King Ferdinand, the County of Urgell was taken away from him in 1413. James was later put in prison for the rest of his life.
Isabella's Children
Isabella and James had five children:
- Isabella of Urgell, Duchess of Coimbra (born 1409 – died 1443). She married Infante Peter, Duke of Coimbra. Their daughter, also named Isabella, became the Queen of Portugal.
- Philip of Urgell (died 1422).
- Eleanor of Urgell (born 1414 – died after 1438). She married Raimondo Orsini, the 6th Count of Nola.
- Joan of Urgell (born 1415 – died 1445). She married twice, first to John I, Count of Foix and then to John Ramon III, Count of Cardona. She had one son with her second husband.
- Catherine of Urgell (died before 1424).
Isabella passed away in 1424. She lived longer than at least two of her children. Her husband, James, remained in prison in Xàtiva until his death in 1433. Their oldest surviving daughter, Isabella, inherited the title of Countess of Urgell.
