Joanna of Aragon was born in Barcelona on November 7, 1344. She passed away in Castellón, Ampurias in 1385. Joanna was the second child of Peter IV of Aragon, who was the King of Aragon, and his first wife, Maria of Navarre.
As a princess, she was known as an Infanta of Aragon because of her birth. Later, she became the Countess of Ampurias when she married. Joanna was a member of the important House of Barcelona family.
Joanna's Marriage
Joanna married John I, Count of Ampurias on June 19, 1373. This was John's second marriage. His first wife, Blanche of Sicily, had passed away. Joanna was 29 years old when she got married, which was considered a bit older for a bride at that time.
Family Challenges
Many people in Joanna's family did not like her father's fourth wife, Queen Sibila. This was because Sibila came from a less important family. Her family also tried to get involved in the royal court, which caused problems.
Joanna's husband, John, had disagreements with Queen Sibila. This led to him rebelling against Joanna's father, King Peter IV. The marriage between King Peter and Sibila also caused tension with his three children who were still alive: Joanna, John, and Martin.
Children of Joanna
Joanna and John were married for twelve years. During their marriage, they had two sons:
- John (born 1375, died 1401) became the Count of Ampurias after his father.
- Peter (died 1402) took over as Count after his brother, but he only ruled for one year.
Joanna died in 1385 when she was either forty or forty-one years old. Her husband, John, passed away thirteen years later in 1398. Joanna is buried at the Poblet Monastery.
