Isabella of Navarre (born 1395 – died August 31, 1450) was a princess from the Kingdom of Navarre. She was the younger surviving daughter of King Charles III of Navarre and Queen Eleanor of Castile. Isabella belonged to the important House of Évreux family.
Isabella's Early Life
Isabella was born in 1395 in the Kingdom of Navarre. Before she was born, her mother, Queen Eleanor, had to return to Navarre. This was because of some issues in Castile involving her brother, John I of Aragon.
Isabella was the sixth of eight children in her family. She had five older sisters and two younger brothers. Sadly, her two younger brothers passed away when they were very young. Her older sisters included Joanna, who died before she could become queen. Another sister was Blanche, who later became queen after their father. There was also Beatrice.
Her Marriage and Family
Isabella was first promised to Infante John of Aragon around 1414. Her mother, Queen Eleanor, even left her money for this marriage. However, John later became King of Aragon but decided not to marry Isabella. He hoped to marry Joanna II of Naples instead.
Isabella eventually married John IV of Armagnac on May 10, 1419. This was John's second marriage. His first wife, Blanche of Brittany, had passed away and had not had any sons.
Isabella and John had five children together:
- Marie of Armagnac (born 1420–died 1473)
- She married John II of Alençon in 1437.
- Marie and John were the great-grandparents of King Henry IV of France.
- John V of Armagnac (born 1420–died 1473)
- He became the Viscount of Lomagne and later the Count of Armagnac.
- He married his younger sister Isabella. They had children together.
- He later married Joan of Foix and also had children with her.
- Eleanor (born 1423–died 1456)
- She married Louis de Chalon in 1446.
- Louis was a Prince d'Orange and a Lord. They had children.
- Charles I (born 1425–died 1497)
- He was the Viscount of Fézensaguet and later the Count of Armagnac.
- Isabella (born 1430–died 1476)
- She was known as the Lady of the Four-Valleys.
- She married her brother John and they had children.
Isabella and her husband, John, both passed away in 1450. Isabella died in August, and John died three months later in November. Isabella was about 54 years old when she passed away.
