The Isanda coronata is a type of sea snail. It's a small mollusk that lives in the ocean. This snail belongs to the family called Trochidae, which are often known as top snails because of their shape.

About the Isanda coronata Snail

What Does It Look Like?

The shell of the Isanda coronata snail is quite small. It can be anywhere from 4 mm to 10 mm in size. That's less than half an inch!

This snail has a solid, polished shell. It looks a bit like a flattened top. The shell is usually pinkish-white. It often has wavy, grayish-pink stripes running across it.

The top part of the shell, called the spire, is low and cone-shaped. The very tip, or apex, is sharp. You can see deep grooves, called sutures, between the different turns of the shell. These grooves have a line of small bumps or beads along them.

Shell Features

The shell has five turns, which are called whorls. The largest turn, known as the body whorl, is rounded at the bottom. The opening of the shell, called the aperture, is taller than it is wide. It has a slightly slanted, square-like shape.

There's also a very deep hole in the center of the shell's underside. This is called the umbilicus. It's like a small, deep tunnel. Around this hole, there's a white rib with deep notches. Just outside that, there's another narrower ring of beads.

When the shell is fresh, you might see a slight pearly shine inside the diamond-shaped opening. The colors on the shell can change a lot from one snail to another. Sometimes, the shell might have brown spots in rows. It can also have white lines and a wide white band just below the sutures.

The inner lip of the shell, called the columella, is straight. It connects to the outer lip with a thin layer of shell material.

Where It Lives

Habitat and Location

The Isanda coronata snail is special because it is endemic to Australia. This means it is found naturally only in Australia and nowhere else in the world.

You can find this snail off the coast of West Australia. It also lives in the waters near the Northern Territory and around the Torres Strait.
