Ishaq ibn Ali (Arabic: إسحق بن علي) was the eighth and final ruler of the Almoravid dynasty. He was an Emir, which is like a prince or governor. He ruled for a very short time in 1147.
Who Was Ishaq ibn Ali?
Ishaq ibn Ali was related to the previous Almoravid ruler, Ibrahim ibn Tashfin. He was Ibrahim's uncle. His family, the Almoravids, controlled a large area in North Africa and parts of Spain.
A Short Reign in 1147
Ishaq ibn Ali became emir in a very difficult time. The Almohads, a new powerful group, were attacking the Almoravid lands. They wanted to take control of the main city, Marrakech.
After the Almohads captured Marrakech, Ishaq's nephew, Ibrahim ibn Tashfin, was killed. Ishaq ibn Ali had to escape. He fled to the Atlas Mountains, a large mountain range, to find safety.
The End of the Almoravid Rule
After a while, Ishaq ibn Ali tried to return to Marrakech and take back control. However, the Almohads were too strong. They conquered the city again.
During this final battle, both Ishaq ibn Ali and his nephew Ibrahim were killed. This event marked the end of the Almoravid dynasty. The Almohads then took over and started their own powerful empire.
