How Isla Cristina Got Its Name
Isla Cristina received its current name on April 12, 1834. This name honors Maria Christina of the Two Sicilies. She was recognized for her help to the regions of Andalusia and Extremadura. This help was especially important during a cholera outbreak in 1833–34.
When the city was first founded in 1755, it had a different name. It was called La Higuerita, which means "The Little Fig Tree" in English. Sometimes it was also called La Figarilla or La Figuerta. In 1802, its name was changed to Real Isla de La Higuerita, meaning "Royal Island of the Little Fig Tree."
