Wildlife on Todos Santos Islands
The Todos Santos Islands are home to some special animals, though some have sadly disappeared.
Birds of the Islands
The islands used to be home to a unique type of Rufous-crowned sparrow called Aimophila ruficeps sanctorum. This bird was only found here, but it is now probably extinct, meaning there are no more left.
Mammals and Reptiles
Another animal that used to live here was Anthony's woodrat, which is also now extinct. However, the islands are still home to a very rare and critically endangered animal: the Todos Santos Island Kingsnake. This snake is a special type of the California mountain kingsnake.
Deep Sea Discoveries
In 1911, during a deep-sea exploration by the USS Albatross ship, a new type of fish was found off the coast of Todos Santos Bay. This fish was named Bajacalifornia burragei, and it's the main example of the fish group Bajacalifornia.
