Isom got its name from a man named Isom Sergent. He was a postmaster who lived right there in the community. The town is located between the larger towns of Whitesburg and Hazard.
In the 1950s and early 1960s, Isom was famous for its "Stock Sale." This was a big event every weekend. People would come to buy, trade, or sell farm animals like cows and pigs. They also sold fresh produce and many other items. It was a lively place, and many families would visit the Stock Sale during their Sunday drives.
