Isra Hirsi is a young American activist who cares deeply about our planet and important social issues. She is known for helping to start the U.S. Youth Climate Strike, a big movement where young people speak up about climate change. She was also recognized by Fortune magazine as one of the "40 Under 40" leaders in government and politics. Isra is the daughter of U.S. Representative Ilhan Omar.

Early Life and School

Isra Hirsi was born on February 22, 2003, in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Her parents are Somali American U.S. Congresswoman Ilhan Omar and Ahmed Abdisalan Hirsi.

Isra went to Minneapolis South High School and finished in 2021. She became interested in helping the environment during her first year of high school. She joined her school's environmental club, which was her first step into activism.

After high school, Isra attended Barnard College at Columbia University. She started her studies there in the fall of 2021. In April 2024, she was suspended from Barnard College. This happened after she took part in a student protest on campus about the university's investments. Isra has stated that she wants to continue speaking out until her goals are met.

Standing Up for Change

Isra Hirsi has been involved in activism since she was young. When she was 12, she joined protests against violence in her community at the Mall of America.

In 2019, Isra helped organize many student-led strikes across the United States. These strikes happened on March 15 and May 3. She also helped create the U.S. Youth Climate Strike in January 2019. This group is the American part of a worldwide youth movement focused on climate change. Isra works as a co-executive director for this group.

From 2018 to 2019, she was the leader of the Minnesota chapter of the High School Democrats of America. In 2019, Isra received the Brower Youth Award for her environmental work. That same year, she also got the Voice of the Future Award. In 2020, BET magazine included Isra Hirsi on their "Future 40" list, recognizing her as a young leader.

On April 18, 2024, Isra Hirsi was suspended from Barnard College. This was because she participated in a student protest on the Columbia University campus. The protest called for the university to change its investment policies.
