Israel W. Charny (born in 1931, died December 14, 2024) was an important Israeli psychologist and expert on genocide. Genocide is the planned killing of a large group of people, often based on their ethnicity, religion, or nationality. Charny was the editor of a big two-volume book called Encyclopedia of Genocide. He also led the Institute on the Holocaust and Genocide in Jerusalem.

His Life and Work

Israel Charny was born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1931. He studied psychology at Temple University and later earned his Ph.D. in clinical psychology from the University of Rochester. A Ph.D. is a high academic degree, and clinical psychology focuses on understanding and treating mental, emotional, and behavioral problems.

He started the first group psychology practice in Philadelphia. He was also a professor of psychology at the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College there.

Charny was very dedicated to studying the Holocaust and genocide starting in the mid-1960s. The Holocaust was the genocide of European Jews during World War II.

In 1994, Israel Charny, along with Helen Fein, Robert Melson, and Roger Smith, helped create the International Association of Genocide Scholars. This group brings together experts who study genocide. Charny later served as Vice President and then President of this organization from 2005 to 2007.

As a clinical psychologist and psychotherapist, Charny helped people with their mental health. He was also a professor at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. There, he started a program for advanced studies in different types of therapy, like family and group therapy. He was also the first president of the Israel Association of Family Therapy. Later, he became president of the International Family Therapy Association.

Charny was well-known for speaking out against the denial of the Armenian genocide. This was a genocide that happened during World War I. He wrote articles and gave talks about genocide and how some people try to deny it happened. He often compared the denial of the Armenian genocide to the denial of the Holocaust. He pointed out that both types of denial use similar methods and have similar reasons behind them.

Israel Charny passed away in Jerusalem on December 14, 2024, at the age of 93.
