Profession politician, economist

Iván Szabó (born January 8, 1934 – died August 4, 2005) was an important Hungarian politician. He served as the Minister of Finance for Hungary from 1993 to 1994. This job is like being in charge of the country's money and economy.

Who Was Iván Szabó?

Iván Szabó was born in Budapest, Hungary. He grew up to become both a politician and an economist. An economist is someone who studies how money and resources are used.

Early Political Life

Szabó joined a political group called the Hungarian Democratic Forum (MDF) in 1988. This was a time of big changes in Hungary. In 1990, he was chosen to be part of the party's leadership.

Becoming a Member of Parliament

Iván Szabó became a member of the National Assembly of Hungary in 1990. The National Assembly is like the country's parliament, where laws are made. From June 1990 to December 1991, he led the Assembly's Economical Committee. This committee focused on money matters and the economy.

Taking on Important Roles

In 1991, Szabó was given a new job. He became the Minister of Industry, Trade and Tourism. This meant he helped manage businesses, trade with other countries, and tourism.

Serving as Finance Minister

After the death of József Antall in 1993, Iván Szabó took on an even bigger role. He became the Minister of Finance. He held this important position until 1994. In the same year, he also became a leader for his party in the parliament.

Later Political Career

Iván Szabó continued to be active in politics. He tried to become the president of his party in 1996. However, he lost the election to Sándor Lezsák.

Starting a New Party

After the election, Szabó and some other members left the Hungarian Democratic Forum. They decided to start a new political group. This new party was called the Hungarian Democratic People's Party (MDNP). Szabó became the first president and leader of this new party.

Challenges and New Beginnings

The MDNP faced challenges in the 1998 election. They did not get enough votes to enter parliament. Because of this, Szabó stepped down from his leadership role. In 2001, he helped create another new party, the Centre Party.

Iván Szabó passed away on August 4, 2005, in Budapest. He is remembered for his long career in Hungarian politics and his work with the country's economy.
