Ivan Francescato (born 10 February 1967 – died 19 January 1999) was a talented Italian rugby union player. He was known for his speed and skill on the field.

Ivan started his rugby journey in his hometown of Treviso, Italy. He wasn't the only rugby player in his family! All five of his older brothers also played the sport at a high level. Three of them – Bruno, Nello, and Rino – even played for the Italian National team, just like Ivan. He learned many of his skills in the youth teams at A.S. Ruggers Tarvisium 69.

Playing for Benetton Treviso

Ivan made his first appearance in the Italian Championship on 14 September 1986. He played as a centre against A.S.R. Milano in Milan. Ivan stayed loyal to his club, Benetton Treviso, for his entire career. He also sometimes played as a scrum half, showing his versatility.

Playing for Italy

Ivan Francescato played his first international match for Italy on 7 October 1990 against Romania. His last game for the Italian national team, often called the Azzurri, was on 8 November 1997 against South Africa.

One of his most memorable moments was during the 1991 Rugby World Cup. In a game against the USA, he scored an amazing try. He dodged and weaved past several American defenders before touching the ball down between the posts. It was a truly exciting play!

Ivan's Legacy

Sadly, Ivan Francescato passed away suddenly from a heart attack at his home in Treviso. After his death, the Benetton Treviso rugby club decided to retire the number 13 jersey for the season. This was a special way to honor his memory and his contributions to the team.

Ivan Francescato had a successful career, both for his club and his country. Here are some of his main achievements:
