Ivan L. Moody (born Ivan Lewis Greening on January 7, 1980) is a famous American singer and songwriter. He is best known as the lead singer for the heavy metal band Five Finger Death Punch (FFDP). Before joining FFDP, he sang for other bands like Motograter and Ghost Machine. During his time with Motograter, he was known by the nickname "Ghost".

Early Life

Ivan Moody was born Ivan Lewis Greening in Denver, Colorado. As he grew up, he lived in several smaller cities nearby. He spent some summers with his grandmother in La Crosse, Wisconsin.

He shared that his grandmother put him in a choir when he was about seven years old. He was part of the choir for a few years. Music has always been very important to him. He started singing in bands when he was 16 years old.

Career

Moody moved to Los Angeles in 2001. He took the last name of Billy Moody, who had married his mother and was like a father to him. In Los Angeles, he joined his first band called Toiz. They played a few shows in 2002 and made a demo, but it was not released.

The next year, Moody joined the nu metal band Motograter. They released their first album, Motograter, in May 2003. The band became quite popular and played at Ozzfest 2003. They also toured with famous bands like Korn and Slipknot. Motograter took a break in 2005.

In 2005, Moody joined the heavy metal band Five Finger Death Punch. His other project, Ghost Machine, released their first album, Ghost Machine, in July 2005. Ghost Machine released their second album, Hypersensitive, in November 2006.

In the same year, Five Finger Death Punch started recording their first album. It was produced by guitarist Zoltan Bathory and drummer Jeremy Spencer.

Five Finger Death Punch's Success

Five Finger Death Punch quickly became very successful. Their first album, The Way of the Fist (2007), sold over 600,000 copies in the United States. It also had three songs that reached the top 10 on music charts.

Their second album, War Is the Answer (2009), sold more than 44,000 copies in its first week. It had five top 10 songs and sold over 700,000 copies. Their third album, American Capitalist, was even more successful. It reached number 3 on the Billboard 200 chart and sold over 90,000 copies in its first week. This was the band's third album to be certified Gold by the RIAA.

In July 2013, The Wrong Side of Heaven and the Righteous Side of Hell, Volume 1 was released. It sold over 210,000 copies. About four months later, The Wrong Side of Heaven and the Righteous Side of Hell, Volume 2 came out. It reached number 2 on the Billboard 200 and featured the popular song "Battle Born".

Five Finger Death Punch has played on many big tours and festivals. These include Korn's Family Values tour and the main stage at Mayhem Festival in 2010 and 2013. They also performed at Download Festival and Rock on the Range multiple times.

Other Projects

Ivan Moody was interviewed for a book called Full Metal: The 50 Most Influential Heavy Metal Songs of the 1980s and the True Stories Behind Their Lyrics. He talked about how Metallica's song "Fade to Black" influenced him as a songwriter.

In 2009, Moody acted in the horror film Bled, playing a character called Incubus. He also appeared with Shawn Crahan in a short horror musical film called The Devil's Carnival in April 2012.

In 2017, Ivan Moody took a break from touring with Five Finger Death Punch. He later returned to the band and continued performing with them.

Personal Life

Ivan Moody has two daughters. They were born in 1998 and around 2013.

Awards and Nominations

Motograter was voted the best band of 2003 by Hit Parader magazine.

Five Finger Death Punch has won several awards:

  • The Best New Band award at the 2009 Metal Hammer Golden Gods Awards.
  • The Most Promising Artist award from FMQB's 2009 year-end Metal poll.
  • They were nominated for Best International Newcomer at the 2009 Kerrang! Awards.

  • They won Best Song for "Lift Me Up" at the 2014 Metal Hammer Golden Gods Awards.
