Ivan Talovac (Hungarian: Tallóci János) was an important nobleman from Croatia and Hungary in the 1400s. He was part of the powerful Talovac family. Ivan held several important jobs. He was the prior of Vrana from 1439 until he died in 1445. A prior was a leader of a religious house, like a monastery. He was also the first governor of Pakrac in a region called Slavonia. Ivan was also a member of the Order of the Knights of Saint John, which was a group of knights who helped people and fought in wars.

His Family

Ivan Talovac's family, the Talovacs, were very influential in the Croatian region of Cetina. They were loyal to the Hungarian king. Ivan himself was of Croatian background. His brother, Matija (also known as Matko Talovac), worked for Stefan Lazarević, who was a ruler in Serbia and also loyal to Hungary at that time.

A Brave Military Leader

Ivan Talovac became the commander, or castellan, of Nándorfehérvár in 1440. Today, this city is known as Belgrade. At this time, his brother Matko was the Ban of Slavonia, which was a high-ranking governor position. Another one of Ivan's brothers, Franko Talovac, later took over as castellan of Nándorfehérvár. His brother Petar Talovac was also a Ban of Croatia. It's likely that Ivan got his important role as governor of Nándorfehérvár because his family had strong connections at the Hungarian royal court, as well as because of his own skills.

In 1440, Ivan Talovac showed he was a very successful military officer. He led the Hungarian forces, which included many local Serbs, during the Ottoman siege of Belgrade. Ivan's forces had about 500 men from Croatia. The city's defenders also had skilled archers from Bohemia (now the Czech Republic) and Italy. The local people of Serbia also helped defend their city.

At first, Ivan didn't know how big the Ottoman army was. He thought he could defeat them in an open battle outside the castle walls. But when he left the castle and saw how many Ottoman soldiers there were, he quickly led his troops back inside the city for safety. During this battle, Ivan's forces used rifles against the Ottomans. This was one of the first times rifles were used in history!

Later Important Roles

After 1441, Ivan Talovac became the župan of the Dubica Župa. A župan was a leader of a county or region. In December 1442, he was also mentioned as the count of Cetina in Croatia. Ivan also held the very important position of prior of Vrana from 1439 until his death in 1445.
