Ivan Warner's Early Life
Ivan was born in Manhattan, New York City, on February 18, 1919. His parents had moved there from Saint Kitts. He left Morris Evening High School early. After that, he worked as a clerk for the New York City Rent Commission.
In 1949, he started working for Congressman Isidore Dollinger. This job took him to Washington, D.C.. While working, he also studied in the evenings at the American University. Later, he studied law at Brooklyn Law School. He became a lawyer in 1955 and practiced law in New York City.
Serving in the New York State Assembly
Ivan Warner was elected to the New York State Assembly on January 14, 1958. This was for the 6th District in the Bronx. He filled a spot that became empty when Walter H. Gladwin got a new job.
He was re-elected in November 1958. He served in the Assembly until 1960. During this time, he was part of the 171st and 172nd New York State Legislatures. The Assembly is a part of the state government that makes laws.
Time in the New York State Senate
From 1961 to 1965, Ivan Warner was a member of the New York State Senate. He represented the 27th District. He served in the 173rd, 174th, and 175th New York State Legislatures. The State Senate is the other part of the state government that makes laws.
In 1964, he was chosen as a delegate for the 1964 Democratic National Convention. This is a big meeting where the Democratic Party chooses its candidate for president. In September 1965, he tried to become the Borough President of the Bronx. However, he lost to Herman Badillo in the election.
Warner returned to the State Senate in 1967 and 1968. He represented the 31st District during the 177th New York State Legislature.
Becoming a Judge
In November 1968, Ivan Warner was elected to the New York Supreme Court. This is a high court in New York State. He served as a judge until he passed away in 1994. During his time as a judge, he moved to live in New Rochelle.
Ivan Warner died on January 26, 1994. He passed away from cancer at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in Manhattan.
