Ivey Hall facts for kids
Ivey Hall is a very old and important building at Lincoln University in New Zealand. It's so special that Heritage New Zealand has listed it as a Category I building. This means it's one of the most important historic places in the country.
The building was designed by an architect named Frederick Strouts. It was built between 1878 and 1880. At first, it was a place where students and the head of the School of Agriculture lived. Later, it became the university's main library. In 1954, it was named after William Ivey. He was the first leader of the school.
Ivey Hall is one of the very first large buildings in Canterbury made from strong, lasting materials. It's also the oldest large building in New Zealand that still exists in the Jacobean architecture style. The building has been made bigger several times. Frederick Strouts designed an addition in 1881. John Guthrie designed the west wing in 1918. Then, Cecil Wood designed the Memorial Hall in 1923.
What Makes Ivey Hall Special?
Ivey Hall is listed by Heritage New Zealand as a Category I building. Its special number is 273. This shows how important it is to New Zealand's history. Sadly, the building was badly damaged by the 2010 Canterbury earthquake. But it has been repaired and still stands proudly today.
