Iveyville is a small, quiet place in Adams County, Iowa, United States. It's known as an "unincorporated community," which means it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town. Some people even call it a "ghost town" because most of its businesses and people have moved away over time.
The Story of Iveyville
Iveyville got its start in 1885 when a post office opened there. It was named after B.F. Ivey, who used to live in a nearby town called Corning. The post office helped the community grow for a while.
A Busy Village
In the late 1800s, Iveyville was seen as a "prosperous village." It had a special meeting hall for a group called the Modern Woodmen of America. There was also a Farmers Creamery, where milk was processed.
The village had one church, the Methodist Episcopal church. A general store, run by O. T. Muzzy, sold many different goods. Above the store, there was a town hall where people could gather. Iveyville also had a blacksmith shop, where metal items were made and repaired. A grist mill was available for grinding grain. The Tanner Bros operated a hardware store, selling tools and other supplies.
Why the Village Changed
In 1902, Iveyville had 46 people living there. But things started to change when the post office closed in 1903. A local newspaper, the Adams County Free Press, said this closure "finished" the village.
Over time, businesses began to leave. In 1922, the last business, the blacksmith shop, moved to Nodaway, a town nearby. By 1925, only 30 people lived in Iveyville. By the 1930s, Iveyville was no longer shown on maps of the area. It had become a quiet place, mostly remembered in history books.
