History of Ciudad Ixtepec
The name "Ixtepec" comes from the Nahuatl language. It means something like "view of the mountain" or "face of the mountain." The city's name was "Iztepeque" until 1935. That's when it officially became Ciudad Ixtepec.
The city was likely founded in the 16th century. It started as a Zapotec settlement. This happened just before the Spanish Conquest of Mexico. For a long time, it remained a community mainly of indigenous people. Their economy was based on growing food for themselves.
In the early 1900s, the city became more important for business. Its location was good for foreign companies. This was especially true when the Pan-American Highway was built, which started as a railway line.
