Izúcar de Matamoros is a city in the Mexican state of Puebla. It is located in the southwestern part of the state. This city is the main town for the Izúcar de Matamoros Municipality.

In 2005, about 41,042 people lived in the city. The whole municipality had a population of 69,413. The area of the municipality is about 514 square kilometers (198.5 sq mi). It is located 1,100 meters (about 3,600 feet) above sea level. Some other important towns nearby are La Galarza and San Juan Raboso. The city has interesting places to visit, like its famous "portales" (arches) and Santo Domingo, which is the biggest church there.

The name Izúcar de Matamoros comes from the Náhuatl language. Náhuatl was spoken by the Aztec people. The original word was Itzocan. This word might mean "place of the flint path." Flint is a type of hard stone.

Other ideas for the name's meaning include "place of painted faces" or "place of obsidian." Obsidian is a dark, glass-like rock. It was often used to make tools and weapons.

Izúcar de Matamoros was involved in the Mexican American War. A small fight, called a skirmish, happened here on November 23, 1847.

More recently, in 2017, a big earthquake shook the area. The center of this earthquake was only about 6 kilometers (3.7 miles) east of the city.
