Iziaslav II Mstislavich (born around 1096 – died 13 November 1154) was an important ruler in Kievan Rus'. He was the Grand Prince of Kiev from 1146 to 1154. This was a very powerful position, like being a king. He also ruled as a prince in other areas, such as Pereyaslavl, Turov, Rostov, and Volhynia. He is known as the founder of the Iziaslavichi of Volhynia family line.

His Family and Life

Iziaslav II Mstislavich was the second son of Mstislav I of Kiev, who was also a Grand Prince of Kiev. His mother was Christina Ingesdotter of Sweden. His grandfather was the famous Vladimir II Monomakh. Iziaslav was baptized with the name Panteleimon.

He started a powerful family branch called the Izyaslavych dynasty. This family ruled in areas like Volhynia and Galicia. He was also the great-grandfather of Daniel of Galicia, another important ruler.

His Wives and Children

Iziaslav's first wife was likely named Agnes. She was the daughter of Conrad III of Germany. Agnes passed away in 1151. They had several children:

  • Mstislav II of Kiev
  • Yaroslav II of Kiev
  • Yaropolk, who was the Prince of Shumsk
    • Vasylko (1151–1182), who also became Prince of Shumsk
  • Evdokia, who married Mieszko III the Old, a powerful duke in Poland.

After his first wife died, Iziaslav married again in 1154. His second wife was a princess from Georgia, a daughter of King Demetrius I of Georgia. However, they were only married for a few months before Iziaslav passed away. After his death, his second wife returned to Georgia.
