József Klekl Jr. (also known as Jožef Klekl) was an important Slovene writer, journalist, and Roman Catholic priest. He was born on March 3, 1879, and passed away on September 24, 1936. He lived and worked in a region that was part of Hungary and later became Prekmurje, which is now in Slovenia.

Early Life and Family

József Klekl was born in a village called Krajna, near Tišina. His parents were András Klekl and Anna Lülik. His family had a connection to public life. His uncle, István Klekl, was the father of another important person named József Klekl, who was a Slovene politician and also a Catholic priest. The Klekl family had some German roots from the Prlekija area.

A Life as a Priest

József Klekl became a priest on June 27, 1902, in a city called Szombathely. For several years, he worked in different places as a curate, which is a priest who helps the main priest. He served for four years in Sveti Jurij, one year in Rechnitz, and then three years in Turnišče. He also spent one year in Murska Sobota. In 1911, he became the main priest in Dolenci, where he continued his work until he died in 1936.

Contributions as a Writer and Journalist

József Klekl was not just a priest; he was also a dedicated writer and journalist. From 1906 to 1919, he was the editor of a special book published every year called Kalendar Srca Jezušovoga. This book was important for the people of Prekmurje. He also edited a newspaper called Novine from 1918 to 1919.

Supporting Local Culture

Klekl was very interested in helping his community. In 1918, he supported the idea of the Slovene March (also known as Slovenska krajina) becoming a self-governing region within Hungary or Slovenia. After World War I, he strongly supported the use of the local Prekmurje dialect. He believed it was important to keep the local language and culture alive. He also wrote articles that were critical of communism.

Legacy

József Klekl is remembered for his work as a priest, writer, and supporter of his people's culture. There is a statue honoring him near St. Nicholas's Church in Dolenci, where he served for many years.
