József Torgyán (born November 16, 1932 – died January 22, 2017) was an important Hungarian lawyer and politician. He led the Independent Smallholders' Party for many years, from 1991 to 2002. He also served as a Deputy Prime Minister and the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development in the government led by Viktor Orbán between 1998 and 2001.
Life and Political Career
József Torgyán studied law at the Eötvös Loránd University in Budapest from 1951 to 1955. He was involved in the Hungarian Revolution of 1956, a major uprising against the Soviet-backed government. After finishing his studies, he worked as a lawyer. This was because political activities were difficult during that time.
In 1988, he helped start the Independent Smallholders' Party. This party focused on the rights of farmers and small landowners. In 1990, he was elected to the National Assembly, which is like the parliament of Hungary. He was re-elected in 1994 and 1998.
After the 1998 elections, his party joined forces with Fidesz, another political party. This alliance helped them form a government. In this new government, József Torgyán became the Deputy Prime Minister. He also served as the Minister of Agriculture, overseeing farming and rural development in Hungary. In 2000, he was even considered as a candidate for the President of Hungary.
In the 2002 elections, his party did not win any seats in the National Assembly. After this, the party became less influential in Hungarian politics. In 2006, Torgyán became the leader of a new group called the Hungarian Torgyán Renewal Movement.
Family Life
József Torgyán married Mária Cseh in 1959. She was an actress who worked at the National Theatre of Pécs. They had a son named Attila, who became an editor. József Torgyán passed away on January 22, 2017, in Budapest.
