Jørgen Hårek Kosmo (born December 5, 1947 – died July 24, 2017) was an important Norwegian politician. He held many big jobs in Norway's government. For example, he was the Auditor General of Norway and even the President of the Storting, which is like the speaker of Norway's parliament.

Who Was Jørgen Kosmo?

Jørgen Kosmo was born in Fauske, a town in Norway. Before he became a politician, he worked in construction. He was also very active in groups that help workers, like the Norwegian Confederation of Trade Unions. These early experiences helped him understand people's needs.

Starting in Local Politics

Kosmo began his political journey in his local community. From 1979 to 1985, he was a member of the city council in Horten. For the last two years of that time, he was the mayor of Horten. This was his first big leadership role.

Serving in the Norwegian Parliament

Jørgen Kosmo was a member of the Storting, which is Norway's parliament, for 20 years. He served from 1985 to 2005. The Storting is where elected officials make laws for the entire country. He was part of the Labour Party.

Leading the Parliament

From 2001 to 2005, Kosmo held a very important position: he was the President of the Storting. This role is similar to being the speaker of a parliament. It means he was in charge of how the meetings were run and represented the Storting.

Minister of Defence
