Kjell Magne Bondevik (born 3 September 1947) is a Norwegian Lutheran minister and politician. He led the Christian Democratic Party. He served as the prime minister of Norway two times: from 1997 to 2000, and from 2001 to 2005. Early Life and Family
Kjell Magne Bondevik was born in Molde, Norway. His father, Johannes Bondevik, was a school principal and a local politician. His mother was Margit Hæreid. Kjell Magne studied theology and became a pastor in the Church of Norway in 1979.
He is married to Bjørg Bondevik. They have three children: Bjørn (born 1972), Hildegunn (born 1973), and John Harald (born 1976).
Political Journey
Bondevik was a member of the Storting (Norway's Parliament) from 1973 to 2005. He was a very active politician from a young age. He led his party in Parliament for several periods. He was also the leader of the Christian Democratic Party from 1983 to 1995.
He held several important government jobs before becoming prime minister. He was the Minister of Foreign Affairs from 1989 to 1990. Before that, he was the Minister of Church and Education from 1983 to 1986. He also served as a deputy to the Prime Minister.
As Prime Minister

Kjell Magne Bondevik served as Prime Minister of Norway for two terms. His first term began on 17 October 1997. He led a coalition government, which means it was made up of several political parties working together. These parties were the Christian Democratic Party, the Centre Party, and the Liberal Party.
During his first term, in 1998, Bondevik shared that he was experiencing a period of sadness or depression. He took a short break to recover. This was a very open and brave thing for a world leader to do. Many people sent him supportive messages. His openness helped make it easier for others to talk about mental health.
His first government ended in March 2000. This happened after a disagreement about building new power stations. A new government then took over.
Bondevik became Prime Minister again on 19 October 2001. His second government was also a coalition. It included the Christian Democratic Party, the Conservative Party, and the Liberal Party. This government made many changes and helped the economy grow.
In the 2005 election, Bondevik's coalition did not win enough seats to stay in power. He then announced that he would retire from national politics.
After Being Prime Minister
After leaving office, Kjell Magne Bondevik continued to work for important causes. In 2006, he started the Oslo Centre for Peace and Human Rights. This center works to promote peace, human rights, and understanding between different religions around the world. It works with other international organizations.
In 2006, he also published his memoir, which is a book about his life. It is called Et liv i spenning, meaning A life of excitement and tension.
Kjell Magne Bondevik has received several honors for his work. In 2004, he was given the Grand Cross of St. Olav, which is a very high award in Norway. He is also a member of the Club de Madrid, a group of former world leaders who work to strengthen democracy. In 2009, he received an honorary degree from the University of San Francisco.
