Who Was Jørgen Kosmo?
Jørgen Kosmo was born in Fauske, a town in Norway. Before he became a politician, he worked in construction. He was also very active in groups that help workers, like the Norwegian Confederation of Trade Unions. These early experiences helped him understand people's needs.
Starting in Local Politics
Kosmo began his political journey in his local community. From 1979 to 1985, he was a member of the city council in Horten. For the last two years of that time, he was the mayor of Horten. This was his first big leadership role.
Serving in the Norwegian Parliament
Jørgen Kosmo was a member of the Storting, which is Norway's parliament, for 20 years. He served from 1985 to 2005. The Storting is where elected officials make laws for the entire country. He was part of the Labour Party.
Leading the Parliament
From 2001 to 2005, Kosmo held a very important position: he was the President of the Storting. This role is similar to being the speaker of a parliament. It means he was in charge of how the meetings were run and represented the Storting.
Important Government Minister Roles
Kosmo also served as a minister in the Norwegian government, meaning he was in charge of different parts of the government's work.
Minister of Defence
From 1993 to 1997, Jørgen Kosmo was the Minister of Defence. In this job, he was responsible for Norway's military and making sure the country was safe.
Minister of Labour and Government Administration
Later, from 2000 to 2001, he became the Minister of Labour and Government Administration. This role involved looking after rules for workers and how the government itself was run. During the same period, he also served as the Minister of Nordic Cooperation. This meant he worked with other countries in the Nordic region.
Becoming Auditor General
After his time in parliament, Jørgen Kosmo took on another big role. From 2005 to 2013, he was the Auditor General of Norway. The Auditor General checks how the government spends money. They make sure everything is done correctly and honestly. It's a bit like being a financial watchdog for the country.
County Governor Appointment
In 2004, Kosmo was chosen to be the County Governor of Telemark. This is a top administrative job in a region. However, he could not start this job while he was still a member of parliament.
