Clarke was born in Rexburg, Idaho. His parents were John R. and Nora Redford Clarke. He went to Brigham Young University (BYU) and graduated in 1952. Before his church service, he worked in the insurance business.

Church Service and Leadership

He served in this leadership group until 1997. At that time, he was given emeritus status. This means he was honorably released from his full-time duties.

In 2012, Clarke spoke to the students at BYU during a weekly devotional.
