John Richard Clarke (born April 4, 1927 – died June 29, 2022) was an important leader in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served the church in many ways from 1976 until he passed away. He was part of the church's Presiding Bishopric and also a member of the Presidency of the Seventy.
Clarke was born in Rexburg, Idaho. His parents were John R. and Nora Redford Clarke. He went to Brigham Young University (BYU) and graduated in 1952. Before his church service, he worked in the insurance business.

Church Service and Leadership
As a young man, J. Richard Clarke served as a missionary in South Africa. He helped share the church's message there.
Before becoming a general authority, he held several local church leadership roles. He served as a bishop, a stake president, and a regional representative in Idaho. He also returned to South Africa as the president of the church's South Africa Cape Town Mission.
Serving as a General Authority
In 1976, Clarke became a general authority. He was called as the second counselor to the Presiding Bishop, Victor L. Brown. He served in this role until 1985.
After this, Clarke continued his service as a general authority. He became a member of the First Quorum of the Seventy. In 1988, he joined the Presidency of the Seventy. He served in this leadership group until 1997. At that time, he was given emeritus status. This means he was honorably released from his full-time duties.
In 2012, Clarke spoke to the students at BYU during a weekly devotional.
Temple President in Hawaii
From 1998 to 2001, Clarke served as the president of the Laie Hawaii Temple. This is a special role where he helped oversee the operations of the temple.
Family Life
J. Richard Clarke was married to Barbara Jean Reed. Together, they had eight children.
