The J. T. Abbot House is a really old and special house located at 34 Essex Street in Andover, Massachusetts. It was built a long time ago, in the late 1840s. This house is a great example of a style called Gothic Revival architecture, which was popular back then.
A famous local builder named Jacob Chickering built this house for Joseph Thompson Abbot. The house has some of the most beautiful and detailed decorations from that time in Andover. Because it's so important and unique, the J. T. Abbot House was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. This means it's officially recognized as a historic landmark!
What Does the J. T. Abbot House Look Like?
The Abbot House sits on the south side of Essex Street. This street has a mix of shops and homes, not far from the center of Andover, Massachusetts.
The house is a one-and-a-half story building made of wood. It has a very steep roof at the front. There are also two smaller roofs that stick out on the sides. Two more similar roofs are on an addition at the back.
The main roof and the side roofs have special carved wooden decorations. These are called bargeboards. The front roof also has a small, pointed window at the top. This type of window is called a lancet-arched window.
The front of the house has two main sections. On the left, there's a cool bay window that sticks out. It has many sides, like a polygon. The front door is on the right side. A small porch, called a portico, covers the front door. Both the porch and the bay window have fancy, carved wooden designs on top.
Who Lived in the J. T. Abbot House?
The land where the house stands was bought in 1844 by Jacob Chickering. He was a very important builder in Andover in the mid-1800s. He developed many properties in the area.
Chickering sold the land, with the house already built on it, in 1850. The new owner was Joseph Thompson Abbot. Later, in 1878, Chickering was even hired to build a picket fence for the property.
Over the years, many different people have owned the J. T. Abbot House. For a while, it might have been rented out by the local Baptist church. They may have used it as a home for their minister. Today, the historic house is used as a law office.
