The Jabez Bacon House is a very old and special house in Woodbury, Connecticut. It was built way back in 1760 for a famous businessman named Jabez Bacon. This house is a great example of a building style called Georgian architecture. Because it is so important, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1971.

What the Jabez Bacon House Looks Like

The Jabez Bacon House is found in the southern part of Woodbury village. It sits on the north side of Hollow Road. This house has two and three-quarter stories. It is made of wood and has a special roof shape called a gambrel roof. A large chimney stands in the middle of the house. The outside walls are covered with clapboards.

Key Features of the House

The front of the house has five windows across. The second floor sticks out a little bit over the first floor. The main door is in the center. It has a fancy frame around it with columns and a triangular top, like a small temple. The three windows on the roof also have these triangular tops.

Inside the Historic Home

Inside, the house follows a common design from the Georgian period. It has a central chimney. The entrance area is wider than usual, with a staircase. Many of the original wood panels on the walls are still there. Some rooms even have their first floors. The living room has an old cabinet. The chimney still has two old ovens from when the house was built.

The History of the Jabez Bacon House

This house was built in 1760 by Roswell Moore. He was a well-known carpenter in the area. He built it for Jabez Bacon. Mr. Bacon was a very important merchant and banker. He ran a store right next to the house. He even sent traders far away, as far as what is now Ohio.

Later Owners and Important People

Later, a man named Daniel Curtiss bought the house. He also ran a merchant business. Mr. Curtiss had a famous salesman work for him. This salesman was Collis Potter Huntington. He later became very famous for helping to build the first railway across America.
