John Range Cartmell (born August 28, 1890 – died February 23, 1979) was a professional football player. He played in the Football League for clubs like Brentford and Gillingham. His main position was an outside left, which means he played on the wing.
Later in his career, he became a trainer for Brentford Football Club. He worked there for almost 30 years! After he passed away, he was honored in the Brentford Hall of Fame in 2015.

Jack Cartmell's Playing Career
Jack Cartmell started his football journey as an outside left. This player usually runs down the side of the field. He played for clubs like Huddersfield Town and Blackpool. He also played for smaller teams such as Mardy and Abertillery.
Football During World War I
In 1914, the First World War began. Because of the war, competitive football was stopped the next year. During this time, Cartmell played as a guest player for Heart of Midlothian. He played 23 games for them and scored two goals.
Playing After the War
After the war ended, Cartmell joined Southern League club Brentford in 1919. He played 30 games during Brentford's first season in the Football League in 1920–21. He left the club at the end of that season.
Cartmell finished his playing career with Southern League club Boscombe. He also had a short return to the Football League with Gillingham during the 1923–24 season.
Jack Cartmell's Trainer Career
After he stopped playing football in 1924, Cartmell stayed at Gillingham. He worked as an assistant to the club's trainer, Bob Kane. A "trainer" in football helps players stay fit and recover from injuries.
In 1926, Cartmell returned to Brentford. He followed Bob Kane and manager Harry Curtis there. Many Gillingham players also moved to Brentford's home ground, Griffin Park. Cartmell became the main trainer for Brentford. He stayed with the club until the mid-1950s.
To thank him for his many years of service, Brentford held a special game for him. This type of game is called a testimonial match. It was played against Hayes in April 1955. After leaving Brentford, he became the trainer for Hayes, an Athenian League club.
Personal Life

During the First World War, Jack Cartmell served in the army. He was part of the Sportsmen's Battalions of the Royal Fusiliers. These battalions were made up of athletes who volunteered to serve their country.
