Jack Williams (born October 18, 1924 – died March 3, 1945) was a brave sailor in the United States Navy. He was given the Medal of Honor, which is the highest award for bravery in the U.S. military. He earned this award for his heroic actions during World War II.

A Hero in World War II

Jack Williams was born in Harrison, Arkansas. He joined the U.S. Navy in 1943 during World War II. He became a Pharmacist's Mate Third Class. This job meant he was like a medic, helping injured soldiers.

The Battle of Iwo Jima

In 1945, Jack Williams was part of the Battle of Iwo Jima. This was a very important and fierce battle in the Pacific Ocean. U.S. forces were trying to capture the island of Iwo Jima from Japan. The fighting was very dangerous and many soldiers were hurt.

On March 3, 1945, Jack Williams showed amazing courage. He was helping wounded Marines on the battlefield. Even though enemy fire was all around him, he kept going back and forth to help his comrades. He saved many lives that day.

Sadly, during the battle, Jack Williams was hit by enemy fire. He died from his injuries while still trying to help others. He was only 20 years old.

The Medal of Honor is the highest military award in the United States. It is given to members of the U.S. armed forces who show extreme bravery. A ship was named in his honor to remember his service. This ship was called the USS Jack Williams (FFG-24). It was a type of warship known as a frigate. The ship served in the U.S. Navy from 1981 to 1996. Naming a ship after a hero is a special way to keep their memory alive.
