Bernard C. "Jack" Young (born June 26, 1954) is an American politician. He served as the mayor of Baltimore, Maryland. Young is a member of the Democratic Party.
Young was first elected to the Baltimore City Council in 1996. He represented a specific area of Baltimore. In 2010, Young became the City Council President. This happened when Stephanie Rawlings-Blake became mayor. On April 2, 2019, Young became the acting mayor. This was when Mayor Catherine Pugh took a break from her duties. After Mayor Pugh resigned on May 2, 2019, Young officially became the mayor. He ran to keep his position in the 2020 election. However, he did not win the nomination from his party. Brandon Scott won the nomination and later became mayor.

Jack Young's Journey in Public Service
Early Life and Education
Jack Young grew up in Baltimore, Maryland. He graduated from Northern High School in Baltimore. After high school, he attended Baltimore City Community College.
Starting His Career
Before entering politics, Young worked at Johns Hopkins Hospital. He started in the cafeteria and mailroom. Later, he moved to the radiology department. There, he worked as a file clerk and then an administrator. He helped turn old paper records into digital files.
In the late 1980s, Young began working for Baltimore City Council member Mary Pat Clarke. He spent his evenings and weekends helping her. From 2007 to 2010, Young also worked as a manager. This was for the Maryland Department of Human Resources. He has been a member of the Historic East Baltimore Community Action Council since 1995. He also helped start the Broadway Development Foundation.
Joining the City Council
Young was first elected to the Baltimore City Council in 1996. He represented District 2. In 2003, the district lines were changed. After this, he represented District 12. He served in this role until February 2010.
In February 2010, Young was chosen to be the City Council President. All council members voted for him. This happened after Stephanie Rawlings-Blake became mayor. She took over after the previous mayor, Sheila Dixon, left office.
Mayor of Baltimore (2019–2020)
Young became the acting mayor on April 2, 2019. This was when Mayor Catherine Pugh took a leave of absence. She needed time to recover from pneumonia. On May 2, 2019, Mayor Pugh resigned from her position. At that point, Jack Young officially became the mayor of Baltimore.
In July 2019, Mayor Young stated that Baltimore would not help ICE agents with immigration raids. He said that immigrants living in Baltimore should not fear being separated from their families. He wanted all Baltimore residents, including immigrants, to feel safe in the city.
The 2020 Mayoral Election
In early 2020, Young had raised more money for his campaign than other candidates. He had about $960,000. Other candidates like Thiruvendran Vignarajah and Brandon Scott had less. Despite raising a lot of money, Young finished fifth in the Democratic primary election. Brandon Scott won the nomination. He then went on to win the general election and became the next mayor.
