White Marsh is a community located in Baltimore County, Maryland, in the United States. It's a place where many people live, but it's not an official city or town. In 2020, about 10,287 people called White Marsh home. It's found northeast of the big city of Baltimore.

The Story of White Marsh

How White Marsh Began

In 1965, leaders in Baltimore County decided that the area where White Marsh is now would be a good spot for lots of new buildings and homes. They planned to build a main town center. This center would be near where two roads, White Marsh Boulevard and Walther Boulevard, would meet.

A company called Harry T. Campbell Sons Corporation owned a lot of land nearby. They had bought this land in the 1930s. They used it to dig up sand and gravel. Later, the Campbell family joined their business with a bigger company. A new family business then worked to fix up their land in Baltimore County. This land had many deep holes from where the sand and gravel were dug.

Helping the Community

In January 1943, the Cowenton Volunteer Fire Company started. This was during World War II. They wanted to be ready for any fire bombs. In 2003, this group changed its name to the White Marsh Volunteer Fire Company. Today, they have a fire station and five vehicles. These include fire engines and an ambulance.

In the late 1960s, another company, Nottingham Properties, started thinking about building a new town in White Marsh. They wanted to create a place with many different uses. This included homes, shops, businesses, and factories.

Planning the Town Center

In 1969, experts looked at how the area was growing. They saw that building I-95 would bring more development to the northeast. The county was planning new main roads from Baltimore County. These roads would go through the Campbell family's land. So, the county agreed to move the planned town center. It would now be built on 1,500 acres of the Campbell land.

The idea was to have a town center shaped like a triangle of main roads. A large mall would be in the middle of this area. The number of homes and businesses would be less as you moved away from the mall. Homes would be built to the north, between Silver Spring Road and White Marsh Boulevard. This area would have all kinds of homes, but no very tall buildings. The area east of the town center, up to I-95, would be for offices and research buildings. The Campbell land east of I-95 was set aside for future factories.

The plans for changing the land use were finished in 1970 and 1971. In 1979, the area was officially called a town center in Baltimore County's main plan.

Growing White Marsh Mall

From 1972 to 1981, the White Marsh Mall was planned and built. The Rouse Company owned and developed it. They rented the land from Nottingham. In 1973, Sears agreed to be a main store. Most stores opened in 1981. In 1992, Hecht's took the place of Hutzler's.

The White Marsh Mall is one of the biggest malls in the Baltimore area. It has five main stores and 190 smaller shops. It covers about 1,400,000 square feet. Next to the mall, you can find one of the oldest IKEA stores in the United States.

Besides the mall, about 2,400 homes have been built in the town center. Also, 700,000 square feet of office and research buildings have been added. The General Motors Baltimore Transmission factory was built in White Marsh. It operated from 2000 to 2019.

The White Marsh Library opened on January 25, 1988. It's part of the White Marsh Town Center. This center also includes the White Marsh Mall, the White Marsh Police Station (opened 1987), and the Nottingham Post Office (opened 1990). Many more shops, factories, and offices are still being built there.
