Mall History: How It Grew
Early Days and Opening (1970s-1980s)
The idea for White Marsh Mall started in 1972. It took almost ten years to plan and build. The Rouse Company was the company that owned and developed the mall. They rented the land from another developer called Nottingham.
In 1973, a big store called Sears agreed to be one of the main anchor stores. The mall officially opened on August 12, 1981. When it first opened, the main stores were Bamberger's, JCPenney, Woodward & Lothrop, Hutzler's, and Sears.
Changes Through the Years (1980s-2000s)
Over time, some of the original stores changed. In 1986, Bamberger's became Macy's. Then, in 1992, Hecht's took over the spot where Hutzler's used to be after it closed. In 1998, Lord & Taylor opened in the space that Woodward & Lothrop had left.
More changes happened in the 2000s. Lord & Taylor closed in 2004. Its space was then split between a Hecht's Home Store and a Sports Authority. In 2006, the original Macy's store closed. A new store called Boscov's opened in that spot. At the same time, the Hecht's and Hecht's Home Store locations became Macy's and Macy's Home, respectively.
Recent Changes (2008-Present)
Boscov's had to close for a while in October 2008 because the company had financial troubles. However, Boscov's was able to reopen in October 2012.
Sports Authority closed its doors in mid-2016. In December 2017, a fun entertainment center called Dave & Buster's opened in that space.
On February 6, 2020, it was announced that Sears would be closing many of its stores across the country. The Sears store at White Marsh Mall closed in April 2020. This meant that JCPenney became the only original store from 1981 that is still open today.
