Jackie Aina's Journey
Starting Her YouTube Channel
After two years of college, Jackie Aina joined the United States Army Reserve. She started her YouTube channel one year after joining the military. Making videos helped her express herself during a challenging time in her life. While she was stationed in Hawaii, she also worked for MAC Cosmetics.
Jackie often heard that makeup trends wouldn't work for her skin tone. This made her want to create videos. She started showing products and looks that could work for everyone.
Speaking Up for Everyone
Jackie Aina believes that people of color are often not included in the beauty world. She has pointed out that many makeup brands do not offer enough shades for darker skin tones. She explained in 2018 that people come in many different shades. What one person might not mind, another person might find very important.
She has also said that colors for eye shadow, blush, and lipstick are not always made for all skin tones. Jackie's honest opinions have sometimes affected her relationships with makeup companies. However, she always says her goal is to help, not to criticize unfairly.
Jackie has also talked about people who say they "don't see color." She believes this ignores important racial issues. In one video, she showed how important color is in makeup. She did a tutorial in black and white, then revealed she had used the wrong colors.
Working with Big Brands
Jackie Aina has teamed up with many makeup companies to create new products.
- In July 2016, she worked with e.l.f. Cosmetics to make an eye shadow palette.
- In March 2017, Sigma Beauty released a set of five makeup brushes designed by Jackie.
- In December 2017, she launched two highlighters, La Bronze and La Peach, with Artist Couture.
Jackie also worked with Too Faced to expand their Born This Way foundation shades. She felt the original range didn't have enough options for darker skin. By June 2018, the foundation had grown from 24 to 35 shades. Jackie helped create nine of the eleven new shades. She listened to her followers and other influencers to make sure the new colors were perfect.
In August 2019, Jackie released an eyeshadow palette with Anastasia Beverly Hills. She made sure the colors in this palette would work especially well for dark and deep-dark complexions.
Awards and Recognition
On January 15, 2018, Jackie Aina won a special award. She received the NAACP Image Award for "YouTuber of the Year." The NAACP created this award category in partnership with Google that year.
