Starting Her Career
After two years of college, Jackie Aina joined the United States Army Reserve. She started her YouTube channel a year after joining the military. Making videos helped her express herself and deal with personal challenges at the time.
While she was stationed in Hawaii, Jackie began working for MAC Cosmetics. She often heard at makeup counters that certain trends wouldn't suit her skin tone. This made her want to create videos. She started showing how different products and looks could work for everyone, no matter their complexion.
Speaking Up for Inclusivity
Jackie Aina believes that people of color are often not well represented in the beauty industry. She has criticized makeup brands for not having enough shades for darker skin tones. She points out that foundations often lack options for a wide range of complexions.
In 2018, she told Bustle magazine that people come in many different shades. What one person might overlook, another might find very important. Jackie also says that colors for eye shadow, blush, and lipstick are not always made to look good on all skin tones.
Even though speaking out has sometimes affected her relationships with brands, Jackie says her goal is never to be mean. She just wants to see more variety.
Jackie has also talked about people who say they "don't see color." She believes this idea can ignore real issues about race. In one YouTube video, she did a makeup tutorial in black and white. Then she showed that she had actually used the wrong colors for her face. This helped her audience understand her point better.
Jackie Aina once confronted Jamie Kern Lima, the co-founder of IT Cosmetics. Jamie had criticized the beauty industry for not showing real women in ads. Jackie challenged her and the industry about not including people of color.
Exciting Collaborations
Jackie Aina has teamed up with several makeup brands to create new products.
e.l.f. Cosmetics
In July 2016, Jackie worked with e.l.f. Cosmetics. Together, they created a special eye shadow palette.
Sigma Beauty
In March 2017, Sigma Beauty released a set of five makeup brushes. These brushes were designed by Jackie Aina herself.
Artist Couture
In December 2017, Jackie announced a collaboration with Artist Couture. They launched two new cosmetic powder highlighters. These were called La Bronze and La Peach.
Too Faced
Jackie Aina felt that a foundation product from Too Faced did not have enough shades. After she shared her opinion, Too Faced decided to work with her. Their goal was to add more shades to their Born This Way foundation. By June 2018, the foundation range grew from 24 to 35 shades. Jackie helped create nine of these eleven new shades. She listened to her online followers and other influencers of color to develop the products. Jackie mentioned that Too Faced had wanted to make their products more diverse even before she became very popular.
Anastasia Beverly Hills
In August 2019, Jackie Aina released an eyeshadow palette with Anastasia Beverly Hills. She said that while the palette was for everyone, her main focus was to choose shades that would work well for dark and deep-dark skin tones.
Awards and Recognition
On January 15, 2018, Jackie Aina won a big award. At the 49th NAACP Image Awards, she received the NAACP Image Award for "YouTuber of the Year." The NAACP introduced this award category in partnership with Google that year.
