The Jacob Aldrich House, also known as the J. Aldrich House, is a historic home located at 389 Aldrich Street in Uxbridge, Massachusetts. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on January 20, 1984. This means it is recognized as an important historical building in the United States.

A Look at the Jacob Aldrich House

The Aldrich family were Quakers. This means they belonged to a Christian group known for their simple lifestyle and peaceful beliefs. Their community included their homes and businesses. The Jacob Aldrich Farm and Orchard was part of this community.

This house was built in 1825. It is a light-colored brick home. The bricks were made in a kiln nearby on River Road. The house stands 2-1/2 stories tall. It has chimneys on each end and a roof that slopes down on the sides. The front of the house is five sections wide and looks balanced. The main door is in the middle. It has narrow windows on either side and thin columns. These columns rise to a semi-oval shape, which is a style from the Federal period. The brickwork on the outside walls is interesting because some of the bricks are square.

Life in Aldrich Village

In the 1820s and 1830s, Aldrich Village grew into a community. It was made up of the large Aldrich family and their relatives. The Aldrich family first came to America in Mendon, Massachusetts. Over time, they became important in local politics.

The Aldrich family were Quakers. Their village included their homes and businesses. For example, 364 Aldrich Street was owned by Daniel Aldrich. He ran a saw mill, a blacksmith shop, and a wheelwright shop. These shops made many products like roof shingles, wagons, and lumber. This house at 364 Aldrich Street is also on the Historic Register. Several other homes in this area are also historic.

The community also had a one-room schoolhouse. There was an ice house too. People would cut and store ice from Aldrich Pond there. The Seth Aldrich House was at 317 Aldrich Street. The family cemetery is on Glendale Street.
