Jacob Black is a fictional character in the books Twilight, New Moon and Eclipse by Stephenie Meyer. He is described as a Native American of the Quileute tribe. In Twilight he is fifteen, in New Moon he is sixteen, and in Eclipse he is seventeen.
When he reaches the age of sixteen, he undergoes the transformation that enables him to phase into a werewolf. He is described as 6' 7, lanky, but still very muscular, with black hair. For the majority of the series, Jacob competes with Edward Cullen for Bella Swan's love.
Role in the books
In the first novel he has a small but very important role, he introduces Bella Swan, to the idea that Edward Cullen is a vampire by telling her Quileute legends. According to Stephenie Meyer via her website, Jacob was originally just a device to tell Bella about the "Cold Ones". However, both she and her editor liked Jacob very much, so he has a much larger role in New Moon and Eclipse the sequels to Twilight.
Film portrayal
Taylor Lautner played the part of Jacob Black in the film adaptation of Twilight. Lautner would continue to play the role of Jacob in New Moon, and all the subsequent films. He also did his own stunts.
