The Twilight series is a group of popular books written by American author Stephenie Meyer. It includes four main novels, plus some extra books and a short story. These books came out every year from 2005 to 2008. They tell the story of a teenage girl named Bella Swan. Bella moves to Forks, Washington, and meets a 104-year-old vampire named Edward Cullen. She falls in love with him.
Most of the story is told by Bella. But some parts, like in Eclipse and Breaking Dawn, are told by Jacob Black, who is a werewolf. There's also a short book called The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner. It tells the story of a new vampire from the book Eclipse.
Since the first book, Twilight, came out in 2005, the series has become very popular. It is especially loved by young adult readers. The four main books have won many awards. Breaking Dawn won the 2008 British Book Award for Children's Book of the Year. The whole series won the 2009 Kids' Choice Award for Favorite Book.
By 2011, over 120 million copies of the series had been sold worldwide. The books have been translated into at least 38 different languages. The four Twilight books were the best-selling novels of 2008 on the USA Today Best-Selling Books list. They also spent over 235 weeks on the New York Times Best Seller list for Children's Series Books.
The novels have also been made into a film series called The Twilight Saga. These movies were created by Summit Entertainment.

How the Twilight Books Began
Stephenie Meyer, the author, got the idea for Twilight from a dream. This dream happened on June 2, 2003. In her dream, a human girl was in love with a vampire. The vampire loved her back but also wanted her blood.
Based on this dream, Meyer wrote a part of what is now chapter 13 of the book. Even though she had not written much before, she turned that dream into a full novel in just three months. After writing and editing the book, she signed a deal with Little, Brown and Company. The book was released in 2005.
Growing the Series
After Twilight became a success, Meyer wrote three more books. These were New Moon (2006), Eclipse (2007), and Breaking Dawn (2008).
When it first came out, New Moon quickly became a bestseller. It reached the number one spot on the New York Times Best Seller List for Children's Chapter Books. It stayed there for eleven weeks. After Eclipse was released, the first three "Twilight" books spent a lot of time on the New York Times Best Seller List.
The fourth book, Breaking Dawn, sold over 1.3 million copies on its first day. This set a new record for first-day sales for its publisher. After finishing Breaking Dawn, Meyer said it would be the last book told from Bella Swan's point of view.
In 2008 and 2009, all four Twilight books were the top four bestsellers on USA Today's year-end list. Stephenie Meyer was the first author to ever do this. The series then won the 2009 Kids' Choice Award for Favorite Book. It even won against the popular Harry Potter series.
