The Jacob Suiter House is a historic building in Le Claire, Iowa. It was built in 1860. This house is special because it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.

This home is part of a group of houses called the Houses of Mississippi River Men Thematic Resource. This group includes homes of important men from Le Claire. These men worked on the Mississippi River. They were riverboat captains, pilots, builders, or owners. Jacob Suiter's family worked on the river for three generations.

About Jacob Suiter

Jacob Suiter (1828-1904) was a river pilot. He guided boats safely through the tricky parts of the Mississippi River. He was the second person in his family to work on the river. In the 1870s, he charged about $10 for each trip he piloted.

Design of the House

The Jacob Suiter House has two stories. It is built on a strong limestone foundation. The house is made of bricks that were made right there in Le Claire. It looks simple and well-balanced.

The house is built in a style called Italianate. This style was popular in the mid-1800s. The main door is in the middle of the house. A small wooden porch covers the entrance. This porch has thin, turned posts holding it up. The house also has a decorative cornice with brackets. These are like fancy shelf-like decorations under the roof. There are also flat, column-like shapes called pilasters on the corners.

The roof of the house is a low hipped roof. This means all sides slope down to the walls. A single-story addition is built onto the back. This part has a gable roof, which means it has two sloping sides that meet at a ridge. This addition was used as the kitchen. There is also a smaller wooden addition behind that. The Jacob Suiter House looks a lot like a smaller, simpler version of the Dawley House in Le Claire.
