Jacob de Gheyn III (1596–1641) was a talented Dutch Golden Age artist. He was known for his amazing engravings. Jacob was the son of another famous artist, Jacob de Gheyn II.
One of the most famous things about Jacob de Gheyn III is that he was painted by the legendary artist Rembrandt. This painting, called Portrait of Jacob de Gheyn III, was made in 1632. It's part of a pair of portraits. The other painting shows his good friend, Maurits Huygens. Both friends wore similar clothes in their portraits.
Life of Jacob de Gheyn III
Jacob de Gheyn III learned how to engrave from his father. His father was a popular artist for the royal family. He even designed a garden for them in The Hague. This love for gardens was something Jacob shared with the Huygens family. They lived nearby and were good friends with the de Gheyns.
His Education and Travels
Young Jacob de Gheyn III studied in Leiden with Constantijn and Maurits Huygens. They stayed close friends for their whole lives. Jacob traveled a bit during his younger years. He visited London in 1618 with the Huygens brothers. He also went to Sweden in 1620.
Later Life and Work
For most of his life, Jacob de Gheyn III lived in The Hague. He stayed there until 1634. Then, he moved to Utrecht. In Utrecht, he became a canon at St Mary's church. This church was later taken down in the 1800s. Jacob's engravings became well-known. People like Aernout van Buchel admired his artwork and wrote about it.
