The Jaeckel Hotel is a special historic building in Statesboro, Georgia. It was once a famous hotel. Today, it serves as the Statesboro City Hall. You can find it at 50 East Main Street.

A Look at the Jaeckel Hotel's History

The Jaeckel Hotel was built in 1905. It has three stories. The building is made from terra cotta blocks covered with bricks. It faces Main Street.

Hotel Design and Changes

The front of the hotel once had a grand porch. This porch was built in a Neoclassical style. This means it looked like ancient Greek or Roman buildings.

After 1939, the porch was changed. Its columns were made shorter. Some decorative parts were removed. Inside, the hotel still has Neoclassical details. The ceilings are made of pressed tin. In 1935, a three-story part was added to the back. An elevator was put in during 1939.

A Hub for Social Life

In the early 1900s, the Jaeckel Hotel was very important. It was the center of social life in Statesboro. Many famous people stayed there.

The Drummers' Building

In 1910, a small piece of land next to the hotel was bought. A special building was put up there. It was called the "Drummers' Building."

What Were Drummers?

"Drummers" were traveling salesmen. They went from town to town. They sold their goods to local stores. The Drummers' Building had three rooms. Salesmen used these rooms to show their products. They could stay at the Jaeckel Hotel. They often arrived by road or by train.

Unique Sidewalk

The sidewalk in front of the hotel is very old. It is made of hexagonal blocks. This type of sidewalk was common around 1900. Today, this is the only part of such a sidewalk left in Statesboro. It's a cool piece of history right under your feet!

Becoming a Historic Landmark

The Jaeckel Hotel, the Drummers' Building, and the unique sidewalk are all important. They were added to the National Register of Historic Places on June 17, 1982. This means they are recognized as special historic sites.
