Her Life and Music Career
Her birth name was Joan Carol Pulliam. After marrying Anthony Bates Sr., she became known as Joan Bates.
Early Recordings
She started her music journey in 1964. Her first recordings were with a group called The Pleasures.
Solo Success and Collaborations
But Jaibi is best known for her solo songs. These included "You Got Me" / "What Good Am I" and "It Was Like A Nightmare". These songs were released in 1967 by Kapp Records. Her second husband, Larry Banks, helped write and produce them. Joan and Larry got married in 1965. They also wrote many songs together.
Her songs did not sell very well. After a few more recordings until 1968, her music career ended. Some of her later songs were with her husband, under the name Lawrence & Jaibi.
Life After Music
Joan and Larry Banks later moved to Hollis, Queens. They had one son, Corey L. Banks. Corey later became a rapper during the Golden Age of Hip-Hop.
After she and Larry Banks divorced, Joan Banks went back to school. She earned a master's degree in computer programming. Joan then had a successful career as a computer programmer analyst. She worked for big companies like Polygram Records, IBM, and Transamerica Corporation.
She passed away from leukemia on September 4, 1984. Official records show her name at that time as Joan Pulliam Myer.
Her Musical Legacy
Since the 1990s, Jaibi's recordings have been featured on several music collections. These include two volumes of Dave Godin's Deep Soul Treasures: Taken from the Vaults. Her music also appeared on Larry Banks' Soul Family Album, released in 2007 by Ace Records.
Remembering Her Music
Her recordings are mostly remembered today because of soul music pioneer Dave Godin. He thought her songs were masterpieces. He described them as having "almost indescribable beauty and poignancy." He believed they were the best examples of Deep Soul music.
Godin felt that even if an artist only created one great work, they should be remembered. He wrote that creating a masterpiece enriches life itself. He believed that such works give people a precious experience.
