Jaime Bayly Letts (born on February 19, 1965) is a well-known Peruvian writer, journalist, and television host. He has won several awards, including an Emmy Award. Two of his books have even been made into international movies. In 1997, he won the Premio Herralde for his novel La Noche es Virgen. This is a very important literary award in the Spanish-speaking world.
Early Life and Education
Jaime Bayly was born in Lima, Peru, into a family from the upper class. He was the third of eleven children and the first son of Jaime Bayly Llona and Doris Letts Colmenares. His uncle, Walter Bayly Llona, is a famous CEO.
He attended Markham College, a British private school in Lima. Later, he studied at Colegio San Agustín of Lima. When he was young, his mother encouraged him to work part-time at the newspaper La Prensa in Lima. This job helped him learn to be more responsible.
In 1982, he was accepted into the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru. He studied there for four years. However, he had to leave the university because he could not pass a required class.
Career in Media and Writing
Jaime Bayly first appeared on television in 1983. He interviewed candidates and politicians during Peru's local elections. After this, he started a career as a late-night talk show host. He became known for interviewing many famous people.
His first late-night show, 1990 en America, quickly became popular with viewers and critics. The next year, he hosted a show called ¿Qué hay de nuevo?, which was similar to famous American late-night shows.
During the 1990s, Bayly hosted late-night shows in the United States. He worked for CBS Telenoticias Network Latin America and Telemundo for six years.
After a change in government in Peru around 2001, independent news media had more freedom. Bayly was able to host a political program called El Francotirador (which means "The Sniper"). On this show, he interviewed candidates for the 2001 presidential election. His strong opinions sometimes caused disagreements, leading him to take breaks from the show. He later wrote a book inspired by this experience, using the same title as the show. He eventually returned to host the program again.
In 2006, he supported a candidate for president. In 2010, Bayly announced that he was interested in running for president himself in the 2011 Peruvian general election. Later that year, he supported a candidate who successfully became the mayor of Lima. Because of his political involvement, the broadcasting company Frecuencia Latina stopped his show.
On his U.S. program, which airs on the Miami-based MegaTV channel, Bayly is known for sharing his views. He has often spoken critically about the government in Venezuela.
In July 2013, Bayly returned to Peru for an interview. During this interview, he stated that he would run for president under the Popular Action party. He had also considered running with other parties in 2011.
