Jaime Bayly Letts (born February 19, 1965) is a famous writer, journalist, and TV host from Peru. He is known for his books and for hosting popular TV shows. Jaime Bayly has won an Emmy Award for his work. Two of his books have even been made into international movies. In 1997, he won the Premio Herralde for his novel La Noche es Virgen. This is a very important literary award in the Spanish-speaking world.

Early Life and Education
Jaime Bayly was born in Lima, Peru. His family was well-known in Peru. He was the third of eleven children. His parents were Jaime Bayly Llona and Doris Letts Colmenares. His uncle, Walter Bayly Llona, is a successful business leader.
Jaime went to Markham College, a British private school in Lima. Later, he attended Colegio San Agustín of Lima. When he was young, his mother encouraged him to work. He got a part-time job at a newspaper called La Prensa. This helped him learn about journalism.
In 1982, he started studying at the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru. He studied there for four years. However, he had to leave the university because he could not pass a required class.
Television Career Highlights
Jaime Bayly first appeared on television in 1983. This was during Peru's local elections. He interviewed many candidates and politicians. After this, he started hosting late-night shows. On these shows, he interviewed many famous people.
His first late-night show was called 1990 en America. It became very popular with TV viewers and critics. The next year, he hosted a show similar to David Letterman's Late Show. It was called ¿Qué hay de nuevo?.
During the 1990s, Bayly hosted late-night shows in the United States. He worked for CBS Telenoticias Network Latin America and Telemundo. He hosted shows there for six years.
After 2001, news media in Peru became more independent. This allowed Bayly to host a political show called El Francotirador ("The Sniper"). On this show, he interviewed candidates for the 2001 presidential election. He shared his strong political opinions. This sometimes caused disagreements with other public figures. He later wrote a book with the same title as the show.
In 2006, he supported Lourdes Flores for president. In 2010, Bayly said he wanted to run for president himself. This was for the 2011 Peruvian general election. Later that year, he supported Susana Villaran. She successfully ran to become the mayor of Lima. Because of this, a TV company called Frecuencia Latina ended his show.
On his TV program in the U.S., which airs on MegaTV, Bayly is known for his strong opinions. He has often criticized the governments of Hugo Chávez and Nicolás Maduro in Venezuela.
Presidential Aspirations
In July 2013, Jaime Bayly returned to Peru. He gave an interview on Channel N. During this interview, he stated that he planned to run for president. He said he would run under the party Popular Action. In 2011, he had also considered running with other parties.
