Early Life and Education
Jaime Caruana was born in Valencia, a city in Spain. He went to the Technical University of Madrid. In 1974, he finished his studies there. He learned about telecommunications engineering, which is about how phones, internet, and other communication systems work.
His Work in Finance
Leading the Bank of Spain
Jaime Caruana was the Governor of the Bank of Spain for six years. He started this important job on July 21, 2000, and finished on July 12, 2006. As Governor, he helped manage Spain's money and banking system.
Helping Banks Worldwide
While leading the Bank of Spain, Caruana also became the chairman of the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision in May 2003. This committee creates rules to make banks around the world safer. He took charge of a big project called Basel II. This project aimed to update how banks manage their risks. He was praised for successfully completing this important work in June 2004.
Working at the IMF
In August 2006, Jaime Caruana joined the International Monetary Fund (IMF). The IMF is an organization that helps countries with their money problems. He became a special advisor and director of a new department. This department focused on money, financial markets, and banking rules. After he left the Bank of Spain, Miguel Ángel Fernández Ordóñez took over his role.
Managing the BIS
Caruana became the General Manager of the Bank for International Settlements (BIS) in April 2009. The BIS is like a bank for central banks around the world. It helps them work together and keep the global financial system stable. After five years in this role, his term was extended for another three years. He finished his work at the BIS in November 2017.
