Jaime Torres (born September 21, 1938 – died December 24, 2018) was a famous Argentine musician. His parents were immigrants from Bolivia. He became known around the world for playing the charango.
The charango is a small string instrument, a bit like a tiny guitar. Jaime Torres learned to play from Mauro Núñez, a Bolivian musician. Mauro Núñez also built musical instruments, and he made Jaime's first charangos.
A Life in Music
Jaime Torres had a very active musical career. He shared his music with people all over the world.
In 1974, Jaime Torres and his band performed at the opening ceremony of the FIFA World Cup in Germany. This was a huge event watched by many people.
A year later, in 1975, Jaime Torres organized a special gathering for musicians in his home country. He wanted to bring instrumentalists together to share their talents. He did something similar again in 1980, but this time it was for children. He helped young people learn about music.
In 1988, Jaime Torres composed the music for a film called "La deuda interna" (which means "The Internal Debt"). This movie was so good that it was nominated for an Academy Award, also known as an Oscar!
Jaime Torres also worked with other famous musicians. In 1964, he helped record the well-known album Misa Criolla with Ariel Ramírez. The next year, in 1965, he went on his first tour across Europe, sharing his charango music with new audiences.
