Jaime de Armiñán Oliver (born March 9, 1927 – died April 9, 2024) was a Spanish screenwriter and film director. He was very talented and his films were recognized around the world.

His movies were nominated for the famous Academy Awards (also known as the Oscars) twice. These nominations were in the "Foreign Language Film" category. The first nomination was in 1972 for his film Mi querida señorita. The second was in 1980 for El Nido.

Several of his films were also shown at the Berlin International Film Festival, which is a big international movie event. These films included El amor del capitán Brando (in 1974), Stico (in 1985), and Al otro lado del Túnel (in 1994). For Stico, the actor Fernando Fernán Gómez won an award for Best Actor at the festival.

Life and Career

Early Life and Writing

Jaime de Armiñán was born in Madrid, Spain, on March 9, 1927. He grew up in a family with many artists, writers, and people involved in politics. He studied law at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid.

After finishing his law studies, Armiñán started writing articles for magazines like Fotos and Dígame. In the 1950s, he became a well-known playwright, writing plays for the theater. Some of his famous plays include Eva sin Manzana (Eve Without the Apple) and Nuestro fantasma (Our Ghost).

In 1959, he began working in television for Radiotelevisión Española. He quickly became known as a great writer and director for TV shows. He created popular series like Galeria de Maridos and Las Doce Caras de Juan. During this time, Armiñán also wrote many successful movie scripts for other directors. He worked a lot with José María Forqué, a very popular director.

Moving into Film Directing

Jaime de Armiñán eventually started directing his own films. His first movie as a director was Carola de día, Carola de noche (Carola by day and by night) in 1969. This film was made for the actress Marisol, who was a child star growing up.

His third film, Mi Querida Señorita (My Dearest Señorita), released in 1971, brought him great success. This movie was very popular and received good reviews. It was even nominated for an Oscar in 1972.

After a comedy film, Armiñán directed El amor del Capitan Brando (The Love of Captain Brando) in 1974. This film tells the story of a young teacher named Aurora and two men who fall in love with her: an older man and a 13-year-old boy. The movie was a big hit.

Acclaimed Works

One of Armiñán's most praised films is El Nido (The Nest), made in 1980. This movie is about an older widower who falls in love with a teenage girl. The actress Ana Torrent won an award for best actress at the Montreal film festival for her role in this movie. El Nido was also nominated for an Oscar, making it Armiñán's second Oscar nomination.

For the next fifteen years, Armiñán focused more on television. He wrote many successful TV drama series. However, he did direct a few more films during this time. One notable film was La Hora Bruja (The Witching Hour) in 1985, which featured strong performances from well-known actors. Another film was Al otro lado del Tunel (The Other Side of the Tunnel) in 1994.

In 2008, Armiñán returned to directing films with 14, Fabian Road. This movie starred actresses like Julieta Cardinali, Ana Torrent, and Ángela Molina.

Family Life

Jaime de Armiñán was married to Elena Santonja, who was a popular TV presenter. They had three children together.
