Jalapa is a city and a municipality located in the Nueva Segovia Department of Nicaragua. It is found in the northern part of Nicaragua, very close to the border with Honduras.
Jalapa has a special connection with Boulder, Colorado, in the United States. They have been "sister cities" since 1983. This means they share a friendly relationship to promote cultural understanding.
Jalapa's Role in the Contra War
Jalapa is located right on the border with Honduras. Because of its location, it was an important place during a conflict known as the Contra War in the 1980s.
During this time, a group called the Contras tried to take control of the city. They were supported by the CIA (Central Intelligence Agency) from the United States. The Contras made two attempts to take over Jalapa, once in late 1982 and again in December 1983. The CIA had told them that if they succeeded, the United States government would quickly recognize their new government. However, both attempts by the Contras to take control of Jalapa were not successful.
