The Jama Masjid Mosque is a very old and important mosque in Srinagar, Kashmir. It's located in the heart of the city's old town. This grand mosque was first built in 1394 AD by a ruler named Sultan Sikandar Shah Kashmiri Shahmiri. Later, his son, Zain-ul-Abidin, made the mosque even bigger.

The Jama Masjid is known for its special architecture and its peaceful atmosphere. It has a huge courtyard and many wooden pillars. People visit it for its beauty and to find a quiet space away from the busy markets nearby. Thousands of Muslims gather here every Friday for prayers.

History of the Jama Masjid

The Jama Masjid has a long and interesting history. It was built by Sultan Sikandar in 1394 AD. His son, Zain-ul-Abidin, later expanded the mosque. This made it even larger and more impressive.

Over the centuries, the mosque has faced many challenges. It has been damaged by fire three times. But each time, the people worked hard to rebuild it. The last major repair was done when Maharaja Pratap Singh was in charge. This shows how important the mosque is to the community.

Unique Features of the Mosque

The Jama Masjid has some very special features that make it stand out.

Amazing Architecture

The mosque's design is truly unique. It has a majestic courtyard where people can gather. The prayer hall is supported by 378 wooden pillars made from Deodar trees. These pillars hold up the wooden ceiling. Most of them are 21 feet tall and 5 feet around. Some are even taller, reaching 48 feet!

Peaceful Atmosphere
