The community of James got its first post office in 1874. A post office is where people can send and receive mail. This post office stayed open for many years, helping the local residents. However, it eventually closed down in 1943.

The name "James" comes from a person named James Blair. He was the brother of a very important businessman named John Insley Blair. John Insley Blair was famous for building railroads across the country.
