Early Life and Freedom

James Apostle Fields was born into slavery in Hanover County, Virginia, in 1844. His parents were Washington Fields and Martha Ann Berkley. In early 1864, he bravely escaped slavery. After gaining his freedom, he became one of the very first students at the Hampton Normal and Agricultural Institute. This school helped many formerly enslaved people get an education.

A Career in Law and Politics

James Fields first joined the Virginia House of Delegates for the 1879–80 term. This was a big step for him and his community. He then went on to earn a law degree from Howard University in 1882. After getting his law degree, he was elected to the House of Delegates again for the 1889–90 term. He chose not to run for reelection after that.

Besides his work in politics, James Fields was also a dedicated teacher. He taught students for 14 years. In 1890, he became a school superintendent, overseeing many schools. He also managed a farm and kept up his law practice. James Apostle Fields passed away in 1903 from a kidney illness called Bright's Disease.

Lasting Legacy

This means it is a special place recognized for its history. Virginia has also approved a historical highway marker for the Fields family in Hanover County. This marker will help people remember their contributions.

James's brother, George Washington Fields, was also a lawyer and a member of the House of Delegates. His niece, Inez C. Fields, made history as the third Black woman to practice law in Virginia. The Fields family showed great strength and dedication to public service.
