James Agar's Political Career
James Agar was a Member of Parliament (MP). An MP is like a representative who helps make laws for a country. He represented different areas in Ireland during his life.
Serving as an MP
- From 1703 to 1713, he was an MP for Old Leighlin in County Carlow.
- From 1713 to 1714, he represented Gowran in County Kilkenny.
- From 1715 to 1727, he was the MP for Callan in County Kilkenny.
- From 1727 to 1733, he represented St Canice in County Kilkenny.
James Agar's Family Life
James Agar was married twice. His first wife was Susannah Alexander. Later, he married Mary Wemyss. She was the daughter of Sir Henry Wemyss.
His Children
James and Mary had at least four children together. Some of their children became important too:
- Henry Agar
- James Agar (who had the same name as his father)
- Ellis (Elizabeth) Bermingham, who became the Countess of Brandon in her own right. This means she held the title herself.
Both Henry and his brother James (after Henry passed away) also served as MPs. They represented Gowran in the Irish House of Commons.

James Agar (the son) had a very big disagreement. It was about who should control the local government of the town of Callan. This disagreement became very serious and led to his death.
